CALL FOR PAPERS: Praying with Objects. Prayer Practices in the Late Medieval and Early Modern World.

It is with great pleasure that I share with you the Call for Papers for the upcoming lecture series Praying with Objects. Prayer Practices in the Late Medieval and Early Modern World. We invite papers from all disciplines that investigate how objects enabled, shaped, or reflected prayer practices in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, up to the Council of Trent.

This series is a collaborative initiative between the University of Hamburg and international partners. It is organized by Dr. Carolin Gluchowski and coordinated by the Department of European History (Chair: Prof. Dr. Markus Friedrich). It forms part of the COST Action CA23143 Participation through Prayer in the Late Medieval and Early Modern World, funded by Horizon Europe, and cooperates with the DFG Research Group 5138 Spiritual Intermediality in the Early Modern Period (Chair: Prof. Dr. Anselm Steiger).

The lecture series will take place on Tuesdays, 4:00–6:00 pm (CET) during the Winter Term 2025/2026 and will be hosted online via Zoom. Presentations should be 40–60 minutes in length, followed by 30 minutes of discussion. All lectures will be recorded and made available on the COST Action’s website. An edited volume based on the lecture series is planned.

Please send your proposal, including:

  • Contact information
  • Paper title
  • Abstract (300–500 words)
  • Short bio

to Dr. Carolin Gluchowski (carolin.gluchowski@uni-hamburg.de) by 15 July 2025.
For further information, please find attached to this email a detailed Call for Papers.

We would be grateful if you could circulate the call within your networks as well.
